Dr Rachel Masika is a global development consultant with a long-standing engagement with leadership development.  She previously taught ‘leadership and negotiation’ to undergraduate BA Business Management Students at Sussex University and also ‘developing leadership’ on the MBA People and Organisations focussing both on knowledge on and understanding leadership and personal development.

Previously she worked with business leaders, mainly FTSE 100 companies in London on leadership relating to corporates social responsibility, supporting business engagement with the community.

As a senior research fellow at the University of Brighton she had leadership roles pertaining to research and ethics.  She has recently published her reflections on leadership in a book ‘The Practice of Leadership in Higher Education’, edited by Kendall Jarrett and Stephen Newton and published by Routledge.  She continues to support leadership development as part of her consulting work.  She focuses on gender and leadership, drawing attention to the gendered facets of leadership and strategies for women and girls’ leadership development.

She has over 15 years’ experience of extensive gender equality analysis, training, facilitation, report-writing, capacity development, policy development and programming in a wide range of sectors with diverse organisations.  She has advised and consulted for the United Nations; UN Women, UNDP, US government, India government, British Council, Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation, Panos; Oxfam and Action Aid.

She has country experience of Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Iraq, UAE and the UK.  Her current research interests include public and organizational policies, information and communication technologies for development/digital development, climate change and higher education and she has published extensively in these areas ( https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Rachel_Masika).

Rachel joined Gayaza High school in 1980 and left in 1985, residing in Kennedy House. Rachel holds BA (Hons) Political Science and French from Makerere University (1989). A MSc (Econ) Development Studies from the London School of Economics (1994); and a PhD in Development Studies from the Open University (2012).
